Commercial Business Unit Director, Germany – Wood & Industrial Coatings and Construction Chemicals

Mackenzie Stuart is working in close partnership with a European Specialty Chemical Manufacturer who are currently looking for a Commercial Business Unit Director to direct achievement of sales and profitability objectives for the Wood & Industrial Coatings and Construction Chemicals portfolio across Germany. The successful candidate will provide direction and oversight of Commercial acumen including Sales & Marketing Managers

Responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the effectiveness of all direct reports in achieving individual performance objectives toward the group goal
  • Be the key leader for the country & be accountable, strategically secure & expand current and new major business across Germany
  • Responsible of local road-map creation according to the group strategy of fast and profitable growth, ensuring we utilise the market potential and ensuring its delivery/execution
  • Understand the market, competition landscape and ensure we have the needed resources to fulfil those opportunities
  • Supervise the implementation and actively communicate the values, vision and strategy and ensure that these are understood by all employees with local road-map context
  • Ensure the company is legally and ethically compliant and acting in accordance to the code of conduct
  • Reporting of progress, of issues rising before they become problems and of opportunities found in addition to the road-map
  • Searching and fining new opportunities for the company’s evolvement
  • Constantly improving the processes and build success stories, share those and enable others in the group to learn from both successes and failures (sparring partner)
  • New strategic opportunities creation, upholding and negotiations.
  • Active participation to local society and its activities
  • Leader of country management team
  • Member of Directory club
  • Implement effective negotiation strategy to secure new business whilst implementing oversight & development of Commercial department
  • Be the point of contact for all Sales-related matters across the region
  • Determine current requirements and trends, you will maintain contact with customers, some of whom are world market leaders, as well as with end customers, suppliers & distributors

To be considered for the role you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be located in Germany preferably the North with a home-based office & be willing to travel regularly to the HQ
  • Must be Bilingual in German & English
  • 5-10 recent years’ experience in Wood & Industrial Coatings and Construction Chemicals settings
  • Must possess a high level of leadership acumen and the ability to think strategically and influence decisions at a high level
  • Must be able to show the ability to manage Sales & Regional Managers
  • Be able to communicate assertively, effectively, and credibly across all levels of the organisation

Recommended Education & Experience

  • Commercial, technical, or chemical, university level of degree or otherwise showed strong experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English & German skills
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of Commercial or BU management with exposure to Commercial Management experience or Commercial related exposure management experience within Wood & Industrial Coatings and Construction Chemicals across Central Europe
  • Travel will be occasionally required 50% of the time


  • Lead autonomously & listen to business objectives from CEO and anticipate business growth trends and future needs of the company
  • Understand and anticipate opportunities for innovative business growth
  • Set standard to take ownership of making change happen
  • Management & leadership of local management team and personnel, co-ordination and steering of sales and customer experience
  • Building and leading the country organisation according to one over one principle, values and strategy
  • Responsible for leading, managing and developing budgeting to be realistic, but ambitious
  • Logistics, warehousing and tinting, QEHS in co-ordination with group operations to support country needs
  • Resources and recruitment to enable growth and profitability
  • Ensure, Sales growth, Profitability, sustainability, environmental initiatives, product portfolio and innovation needs are brought to the Groups attention
  • Communicate information and knowledge sharing and collaboration between function, countries and group is easy and timely
  • Ensure local sales takes the ownership of local customers entire customer experience from opportunity to aftercare and continuously improves this
  • Ensure group collaboration is functioning
  • Compliance to Group directives, instructions and rules are carried out
  • Continuous development and improvement of both personnel and processes Embrace personal change, demonstrates flexibility & implement experience to support new alternatives and solutions with a positive attitude
  • Be able to manage multiple activities to achieve goals and responsibilities

Necessary skills

  • Proven work experience on a Directory level or similar Senior Commercial Executive
  • Ability to prioritise workload, multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organisational skills, with an ability to prioritise important projects and sales opportunities
  • Ability to manage senior teams
  • Strong leadership and communicational skills
  • Working experience in process industry
  • Customer understanding
  • Strong knowledge and solid understanding of the local culture and needs of different personality types and how to lead them
  • Understanding of family business culture and long-term thinking
  • PC Requirements- MS Office- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Effective communication with work contacts- Peers, CEO and Technical departments
  • Strong phone, email and in-person communication skills

Salary Range

€150,000 - 200,000
