Senior R&D Chemist – Packaging Coatings


  • This position will support the commercialisation (testing, customer approval / qualification, application & process development) of the Packaging product line, including beverage can coatings (2 & 3 piece), Commercial & Speciality application in the Packaging Industry
  • This position is in direct support of the manufacturer’s business goals and market objectives
  • This incumbent is responsible for using acquired technical expertise to further the development and support of commercial products
  • Provides independent thought, contributes to and designs his/her own experiments
  • Follows experimental procedures and generate reliable data in a timely manner
  • While this is a laboratory based position travel may be required in support of ongoing sales/support efforts

The Successful Applicant: Our client is looking for a professional with the following background and experience:

  • Proficiency in Malay & English
  • Must have at least 5 years’ experience in coatings
  • B.S. Degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Coatings Science, Material Science, Physics, or Chemical Engineering is required
  • MSc or PhD. Degree is required if <3 years’ experience in formulation of coatings
  • Must have experience in product scale-up, manufacturing, implementation & development of raw materials, monomers, liquid resins additives & solvents
  • Experience in R&D, stage-gate process, computer literacy with knowledge of ISO requirements preferred
  • Must be eligible to work & live in Singapore

You will be responsible for:

  • Product development of projects efficiently and effectively to achieve target objectives; work closely with cross-functional teams within the company
  • Establishing and maintain close working relationships with colleagues nationally & globally
  • Support implementation, training and customer needs
  • Conduct laboratory activities supporting prospective customers including, but not limited to, development and completion of test matrices, application trials, and data analysis within agreed-upon timelines
  • Support QC functions by ensuring thorough testing of companies manufactured products to ensure product quality
  • Conduct laboratory application and experiments in support of next-generation products to gain deeper product knowledge and to facilitate introduction and commercialisation
  • Support technical service by designing and conducting laboratory experiments to troubleshoot existing and new customer systems to determine source(s) of problems
  • Support marketing initiatives by preparing display parts and field samples, generating supporting data and participating in customer training when required
  • Effectively communicate results with clear, concise reporting, develop corrective procedures, write, validate and distribute other technical information as appropriate to technical, management, sales and customer representatives
  • Maintain a safe, organised laboratory in compliance with all established R&D policies
  • Directing activities of assigned technician(s) toward achieving project objectives
  • Stay current with scientific and technical advances & explore new opportunities in emulsion polymers and/or resins chemistry and processes
  • Collaborate with global research colleagues and external centres of excellence
  • Developing testing procedures and formulate Packaging Coatings
  • The design and development of new emulsion polymers and/or resins in the field of Packaging Coatings

Job description: Reporting to Technical Manager

  • Work cross functionally with Operations, Manufacturing & Technical teams to determine market needs within the industry and assists in identification of innovative solutions
  • Apply both fundamental principles and creativity to the development of global specifications for incoming raw materials
  • Have a passion for continuously learning and applying new tools for developing new products
  • Establishing formulation guidelines based on a deep understanding of the key chemical and physical interactions in Packaging coatings formulations & knowledge of end applications
  • Mentor junior chemists and technicians
  • Hands-on experimentation and superior problem-solving skills along with to work and partner effectively with individuals outside of own organisation
  • Implement coordinate raw material changes across cross functional teams (Technology, Operations & Procurement)
